Exercise and Meditation in Nature

Today I went rafting with my family and friends. We went down the Trinity River in California. The rapids were class 2 and 3, with one little tiny class 4. It had been a very long time since I have been river rafting, perhaps a few years. I’ve been working 60 to 70 hours per week and never found the time to go. Today was different only because we had some friends visiting from out of town and we really needed to entertain them.

While we were on the river, I began to realize that I rarely exercise or meditate like I used to. In my early 20s, I was addicted to meditation exercises. Now with the family, I rarely find time to exercise or meditate anymore. Recently, I realized that I’ve been neglecting myself, not taking care of myself like I used to. In the olden days, I would get off work and exercise. I would meditate each morning when I woke up. Now with kids, neither of those things happen.

I am a religious person. I pray to God every day. But I rarely take care of myself. I kind of the spec God to do it all for me. I expect that God will take care of my health and well-being, but maybe that’s not how it works. Maybe it’s necessary for me to learn to take care of myself. I’m not quite sure what to think, but I know that God is not going to make me exercise or meditate, those are things that I have to do myself to take care of myself like I need to. It’s not that I have to do those things to please God, but I do them because they please me and make me feel good. When God want that for me?

I’m going to start meditating more often. Perhaps I will hear God’s voice when I do. If so, I’ll ask him what is best in the long run. I think he just spoke to me… how could it not be good for me if that is what brings me joy?

I really can not stand being out of shape anymore. In the past, I was the guy who was always out of shape, but in saying that, I have been instilling a common notice of myself.
